My current body of work explores the longing and anxiety of connection.
Networked systems of wires define the physical and psychological
space through which we reach out to each other, reflecting and defining
the essence of that connection. The wires themselves cut into the
landscape and stand against the sky in snarls — suggesting
isolation, desire, anxiety — the accidental patterns created
are both the means of connection and the psychic reflection of it.
As in the language of a recollected dream, where objects are less
visible but better understood,
these ubiquitous tangles negotiate chaos and design,
the organic and the mechanical.
The tension in this uneasy marriage mimics the paradox between
our need for intimacy and the indifferent mechanisms
for transmittal. No matter the word spoken into the phone, the wires
that carry
the
message send their own message – distance, space, technology,
abstraction. The means becomes the meaning.
